DRIFTIN BLACK LEO, affectionately known as Spade is a 2016 AQHA true Black 8-year-old Gelding that stands 16 hands, weighs 1450 pounds and wears a number 2 shoe all the way around. Any day that you get to ride Spade is a good day spent on the back of a broke, eager to please, eye catching gelding. Spade has been used in all aspects of ranch work, trail rides, been in parades, used as a lesson horse, ponies colts and is a finished head horse. I have owned Spade since he was a two-year-old and he came out of the Bath Brothers Ranch breeding program in Wyoming. Spade’s sire, RAIDERS BLUE MAN is 40% BLUE VALENTINE and known for his gentle nature and athletic ability. Spade’s dam, BLUE LEO DRIFT LADY is the perfect cross of BLUE VALENTINE and DRIFTWOOD breeding which is considered the best cross for genetic strength and versatility. BLUE VALENTINE will be inducted into the Class of 2024 AQHA Hall of Fame. “Few horses have made such an impact that their reputation outlives them by more than a few generations. His influence is still seen in the breed nearly 70 years later.” (taken from the AQHA website about BLUE VALENTINE). Spade has been a true gentleman when it comes to putting in a hard day’s work and has always done his best in whatever I ask him to do. Spade is very cowy and stays levelheaded when roped on, scores well, has natural rate and faces quickly, knows his job on the ranch and is a pleasure to trail ride. Spade can take the lead or follow, and he is very sure footed and easily maneuvers through rugged terrain including water. Spade has a great disposition which makes him very easy to work with, he is a perfect gentleman to shoe, bathe, clip, catch, fly wipe, just saddle up and go, even with time off. Every morning, I call to him to come in from the field and he comes running to greet me at the gate. He knows his days work is ahead of him and he loves attention and grooming and will stand tied all day if needed. Spade hauls well in the trailer and has been hauled from Montana to Arizona many times without any fuss, backs out of the trailer and eats and drinks along the way. Spade is used to dogs, traffic, tractors, atvs, pavement, bridges and just about anything you would come across while riding. Can be ridden out alone and will get the job done and bring you back home with a smile on your face. Spade has always been sound and healthy and has always been vaccinated and shod on a regular basis. He does have a small cosmetic scar on his left hind cannon that he got when he was a three-year-old. Branded with the Running M on his left thigh, a few white hairs in his forehead, left hind pastern and right hind half pastern Currently in Maricopa AZ. Call me with any questions. 406-253-5442.
