Meet Sierra, an 11-year-old black Quarter Horse mare standing at 14.2 hands. Sierra is a lovely, calm horse on the ground, however, she is best suited for an intermediate or advanced rider when it comes to being ridden. Sierra has training in both English and Western disciplines, with her primary experience in trail riding. She also began basic driving training but had to pause due to health concerns. While she has not shown in competitions, she is a well-rounded horse that enjoys spending time outdoors. Sierra can be a perfect partner for someone looking for a light trail horse or even a pasture companion. She’s not a snuggly, affectionate mare but she will listen to you so long as you are confident, firm but fair, and kind. Health History & Special Considerations: Sierra has been diagnosed with navicular in her front legs and mild arthritis in her right hind leg, conditions managed with corrective shoeing (Morrison full roller upon initial discovery but now just a wedge pad). This has caused the majority of her health and behavioral changes over the last year. She is not subtle when it comes to her discomfort and will show you exactly how she is feeling. This however presents itself in a negative behavioral manner by way of kicking. pinning ears, or lashing out. We have managed to find exercises to alleviate this discomfort though with regular stretches she is comfortable and sweet. She just requires someone who can pay attention to her as the days change. In February 2024, Sierra was treated for Lyme disease and is recovering well. Regular massage therapy has also been beneficial in easing her discomfort. Sierra has been kept up-to-date with regular vet care and farrier work, though she requires someone with patience to handle her during shoeing, as she tends to be a bit feisty during that process. She does best when held calmly during shoeing, as she doesn't enjoy cross-ties during the process. Sierra is most comfortable in warmer weather and can be more irritable in the cold, but when comfortable, she is a calm, quiet, and easy-to-handle mare. Her ideal home will be one that understands her medical needs and has experience with horses that may require special attention and care. We are seeking a loving home for Sierra, where she can continue to thrive as a light trail partner or a companion. With her potential for the right person, Sierra will be a loyal and calm companion. For more information and details about her medical history, please reach out with a serious inquiry. We’re looking to find her the perfect home where she can receive the care and attention she deserves.
