KY Hot Brown 16.3 hands 5 yr old (2019) OTTB Bay Gelding RRP ELIGIBLE - hunter, jumper, or event prospect. 14 starts and won over $50k. Has not raced since December 2022 due to an owner issue, but has recorded workouts in 2024 that makes him RRP eligible. He has desirable bloodlines - Shackleford and Big Brown. Sammy is a big boy and we measured him at 16.3h. Once he gets more muscle and weight, he is going to fill out nicely. He has a beautiful long neck and huge shoulder which is only looking better as he figures out post-track life. At the trot, he can fling his toes nicely and his canter stride is huge with a nice lope to it. He has a nice uphill build and carries himself well. His gates continue to improve with fitness and training. Sammy has clean tight legs and solid feet. He currently wears front shoes, but potentially could go barefoot. He is up to date on vaccines and a dental (October '24). Sammy is super sweet and easy on the ground, as are most Shackleford offspring. The shippers who transported him raved about how well behaved he was on the trailer and at layover farms. He stands on crossties to get groomed / bathed, and for the farrier. Less than a week after arriving from the track, we used him as an example horse for a farrier clinic and had multiple clinic participants practice farrier stance on him. Our farrier wants us to keep him because he’s so easy! Our wellness and chiropractor vets both commented on how well behaved he was for his appointments. When Sammy first arrived, we focused on a lot of ground work and lunging to keep him RRP eligible. He stands quietly to get tacked up and when mounting. We started with lightly walk trotting him under saddle and found he was very willing. As with most OTTBs, he is learning that he can travel to the right. He steers well and he's already offering to drop his head and go on contact. We trotted him over a few jumps and he's unfazed. At first, we rode and lunged/ground work mostly in our indoor due to weather and we don't have a fence in the outdoor, so the walls help with steering. However, he handled his first outdoor ride well- he was curious about his surroundings, but never spooked. We started to canter him under saddle and he's naturally balanced - he hardly got fast to balance himself like many OTTBs. He also gave us a lead change when cantered across the diagonal. He’s an amateur friendly horse, but with all projects, we recommend professional help or an amateur with past re-start/green horse experience. An amateur rode him for his first and second post track rides. We are currently focusing his training toward a career as a hunter and/or jumper. Though we are not an event or dressage farm, we also see Sammy going toward those directions. Price will increase with training. He’s going to be an amazing horse for someone! $6,500 (Subject to change- willing to accept offers)
