Whiskey is a 13 yr old, grade quarter horse gelding. He is super sweet and in your pocket. He is easy to catch and easy to have around. He loves attention and likes to be with you. He can be turned out with anyone we have and doesn't get buddy sour. Whiskey was purchased at auction by a client of mine last spring. She was told that he is a perfect family horse and could get along with any rider. While I agree that he is extremely broke, he is also smart enough to take advantage of a timid rider. She only trail rode alone and when he decided he wanted to go home he got progressively more sassy (over several months) beyond her confidence to correct him. He has never escalated to anything dangerous with us but did cause his previous owner to fall off and squashed her confidence. When I bought him from her it took one or two rides to correct the attitude. Once he realized that I wasn't going to give into his attitude he quit trying. We haven't had any issues since. I want Whiskey in a home where he can thrive. I believe that he would be best suited to a rider that was confident and comfortable correcting any sass and maintaining his manners. Whiskey is an absolute blast in the arena and out. He is super broke- pivot on the forehand or hind quarters, side passes, works off your legs very well, knows his leads. We often trail ride him bareback because he is such an easy guy. I have students as young as 12 that have ridden him on the trails and in the arena with no issues. That said she is a very capable rider for 12. Because of all his buttons and his history testing his riders I would not be comfortable putting a beginner or a timid rider on him on a consistent basis. We did haul him to a clinic a few weeks ago. He crow hopped once when asked to canter but after a correction was a total gem. Not sure if it was because he is out of shape or just a little fresh. Whiskey's one other issue when he came in was problems loading. It took one 15-20 minute session before he was loading himself. As long as the person loading him is confident he will load pretty easily after a minute. He will stand tied or in the cross ties for hours, he is great for the farrier. He is up to date on vaccines, deworming and farrier care but has not been in need of a dental since coming. I was super excited to have Whiskey as part of my lesson program this summer for my intermediate students. However, I have over extended myself this winter and my health is suffering. Due to my MS I need to cut back on the number of horses I have to care for and the more versatile complete beginner horses are the ones that will stay for my business.
