Honey is a 15 year old 15.3hh palomino quarter horse mare who was a hunter/jumper lesson horse for the majority of her life. The barn she was at closed down and she has been my pasture ornament for the past 3 years. Several years ago she was diagnosed with mild navicular and we thought she wouldn’t be able to be ridden. She now laughs at us because she has remained barefoot and sound. At baseline she has more whoa than go but when the weather changes it doesn’t stop her from running with the other horses and bucking while demonstrating her definitely not lame status. She knows her job as a lesson horse well and would still be capable of doing light riding with children or small adults most likely for many years to come. She has no pain with the navicular and requires no maintenance. She gets fat on air and is an easy keeper. Loads and stands for the farrier with no issues. She would find it too much energy to spook at anything and has been to numerous shows over the years. With her extensive knowledge and training I would hate to waste her as a continued pasture ornament. I do more trail riding these days and if I want to finish last on every single ride I could put her back into work. She doesn’t bite or kick but if you tighten her girth too tight you will get mare ears, a glare, and a small cow kick because anything more would be too much work. She isn’t herd bound or buddy sour, as long as you have food she could care less if she is alone.
